Online Casinos and Safety

Published on: July 23, 2009

A recent survey was completed by Betfair to determine what online gambling players are concerned about most when it comes to choosing an online casino.  In recent news from Europe there have been a number of online casino operator scandals.  These casinos have taken players’ money and even taken away winnings due to their illegal practices.  This comes from unregulated online casinos.  In the UK there is less of a chance of having issues with online casinos and safety with money.  This is due to the fact that the UK allows the online casinos to operate so long as they have a licence.

Other countries in Europe have been putting off legalising online gambling.  Instead they allow only their own countries to have online casino sites.  Any foreign company has had a hard time getting the proper licence to work within the country.  The European Union is working on this, stating that any country in the EU must obey fair trade laws and open up to online gambling casinos stopping the monopolies certain countries have had.

The survey stated that online casino players are most worried about the safety of their deposits and their winnings.  Surprisingly what can happen in the UK is a seizure of winnings or placing an account on hold.  British players have been subjected to these issues by the US government.  US players can also see this happen to them.  About 60 percent said they are worried these types of seizures will continue due to the unlicensed companies operating on the internet.

Also it was discovered that four players who were interviewed felt other players might cheat in the poker rooms.  The US is being considered a problematic player with this issue.  The US says online casinos are not safe and it looks like they are going to prove it with these seizures.  Of course in the US a law was passed in 2006 making it unlawful for banks to allow transfers of funds to online casinos and making most foreign casinos unwelcome.

UK players stated in the survey they will steer clear of US operators.  Instead they will stick with companies they know they can trust.  They will research where to play, look for reviews, and make an educated decision before playing in online casinos.  It is difficult for reputable online casinos to keep their players when scandal and other problems arise, but there has been no shortage of revenue for many UK casinos.
