Newfoundland Opposes Legalization of Online Casinos

Published on: August 22, 2010

In the last two years there has been a lot of talk about countries around the world legalizing gambling.  The USA has been fighting fines and blocking changes to the online casino industry, yet many land casinos are working to get licenses when new laws are based.  France, China, and many other countries have worked to create regulations that will be passed by the European Union.  The commission has the ultimate say in the regulations since they are the ones trying to get the online casino industry to provide fair trade.  Some countries have had a monopoly, which the EU does not appreciate.

Newfoundland like the US is trying to block online casinos.  The government announced they are opposed to legalization within their province.  Danny Williams stated the province is not yet willing to allow new revenue from online casinos into their country.  A lot of the regulations being passed in other countries like British Columbia, Canada are based on getting tax revenue.  The countries need it to help shore up their economy.  They feel that the revenue will be the difference between more problems and solving those they already have.

Newfoundland does not feel that they need more money from the online casino industry because they have enough in taxes from alcohol and tobacco.  It is not always about the extra revenue regulations can create.  For some countries it is also about making it safer for players in online casinos.  They feel unregulated casinos can create scams, illegal gambling, and much more.

Newfoundland does not seem to have this stand.  Instead they feel online gambling is a concern and it should not be legalized but completely blocked out.  Online gambling revenue could reach as much as $50 million in extra revenue for Newfoundland. They are not concerned with this extra income.  The Premier stated the Atlantic Lottery has made comments regarding online gambling within the province, but nothing has occurred yet.  Government officials find there is not a lot of support for the gambling, especially among cabinet members.  They also feel any regulations proposed would fail.

This is not a surprise since there are still many countries that feel the same.  They do not wish to create larger problems for their residents, especially by allowing online casinos in.  They fear most of all that gamblers may increase their debts if online casinos were to be legalized.
