China Restricting Online Casinos

Published on: May 6, 2010

Talk regarding the legalization of online gambling and online casinos has increased in a number of countries recently.  The news has even been somewhat different depending on the sources, but the Chinese government has just made their position very clear on what will be allowed regarding online casinos.  The Chinese government has had legal land casinos for many years in certain parts of the country.  They have to a degree had online casino sites that are based solely on the online casinos in China.

They have been one country to create a monopoly in the online world regarding online gambling.  They do not want outside internet casinos in their borders according to the recent announcement.  Government officials stated that they will be bringing in harder regulations to put a stop to the unwanted sites.  They will strengthen their blocks on the internet to ensure that no outside information is allowed in.  Only the Chinese government will be allowed to say what is posted on the internet.  With such strict laws it is difficult for many to have fun online, but on the other hand their force regarding outside online casinos may be enough to stop scam sites from leaking in.

Unfortunately, China has not been diplomatic in their refusal to allow in outside online casinos.  Even trustworthy casino operators are being turned away as “hostile forces.”  Any online casino, pornography or even search engine could be considered a hostile force.  In fact Google has been told they are out of China.  Their operations will have to move to Hong Kong since they no longer follow the Chinese censorship policies.

China has recently become a very aggressive power in the east, even going so far as to have a bad relationship with such countries as the UK and the US.  Their recent announcement regarding online casinos is not surprising considering recent events and opinions which have formed in the government of China. China believes the online casinos are driving money away from their economy, and it would being that they are not based in China.  However, the Chinese people have spoken out about these new internet laws and are highly dissatisfied.  Even though they are unhappy with the new rules there is little they can do to change.  The government is also unwilling to say just what measures will be in place.  For UK players it will mean keeping their favored casinos to themselves with little competition from Chinese players.
