United States Still Might Offer Online Casinos

Published on: November 26, 2009

Online casinos are waiting to find out if they will be able to make more revenue from the United States.  Online casinos in the United Kingdom may also have to reconsider their moves out of the proper United Kingdom to Gibraltar in order to get into the United States market.  This year the UK online casinos have seen an increase in their taxes.  Some of the top online casinos decided they had to move to Gibraltar to save on taxes.  The issue with this is Gibraltar has lower regulations than the UK.  The casinos have a chance to get away with certain things and it could definitely affect how welcome they might be in other countries like the US.

The United States has held the position that online casinos do not have enough regulation, security or goodness about them to be allowed.  In fact in the last several years many top UK casinos have left the market due to the unfair laws the United States has instigated.  There is one supporter of online casinos that is trying to get the 2005 laws changed and make the European Union happy.

Representative Barney Frank has tried several times to get the laws changed to open up the US market to local online casinos, as well as international online casinos.  He sees it as a way to help the economy by bringing in more revenue.  Others see it as a way for people to get into more debt due to lower regulations.  It has been a long debate, and a lot of news continues to say the US will not be changing their minds to allow online casinos.

Still Barney Frank just scheduled a hearing on December 3rd.  He will be going before the House Financial Services Committee to discuss the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act or UIGEA.  It has been stated that on December 1st regulations will go into effect for a regulated online gambling industry, but many of us are still waiting to see it.

Bills have been introduced by Barney Frank with mixed reviews.  No one is expecting to see any votes to be made on Thursday.  However, it will be interesting to see if the recent changes, the hearing, and votes to come will finally change the online casino industry in the US.  If the changes do occur UK players will have more online casinos to choose from, but also more competition.
