Kaplan, founder and manager of BetOnSports (an online sportsbook), had been on the run for over eight months when officials from the FBI, the Domincan's National Police and the US State Department made the arrest. Nabbed in a Santa Domingo hotel, Kaplan was then transferred to Puerto Rico where he was handed over to US authorities. In Puerto Rico a US Magistrate has been asked to either immediately order that Kaplan be sent to St. Louis or to hold him in custody pending a removal hearing and a detention hearing to hold him without bond. The charges against Kaplan include 20 violations of federal law. Amonst them; interference with the administration of internal revenue laws, tax ivasion, racketeering and the Wire Act. Although no trial date has yet been set, it is known that the case has been assigned to US District Judge Carol Jackson. Forty Eight year old Gary Kaplan was not the first BetOnSports executive to be detained by authorities. Last July, the CEO of BetOnSports, David Carruthers was arrested during a stopover in Dallas Texas on his way to Costa Rica. And there are others out there who are still considered at large, BetOnSports co-owner Norman Steinberg and co-defendant Peter Wilson. The arrests are largely due to the United States implementing an Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act and their criminal prosecutions authorities “Global campaign against illegal gambling online." |
